Elliot Eversons goal in the 100th minute propelled the Indiana Tech mens soccer team, which was unranked, to a 1-0 victory over second-ranked Maine Fort Kent in the opening round of the NAIA Championships in Fort Kent, Maine.
Eversons goal came from just outside the 18-yard box, beating goalkeeper Giovanni Sinclair high.
Indiana Tech goalkeeper Josh Verhulst, who kept the game scoreless with stops in the waning seconds of regulation time, finished with seven saves. The host Bengals (17-1-1) outshot the Warriors (13-6-3) by a total of 18-6.
The Warriors advance to the round of 16 in Fresno, Calif.
Volleyball
INDIANA TECH 3, WALSH 1: The Warriors won their opening-round match in the NAIA national championships, defeating Walsh 25-22, 28-26, 25-14 in Fort Wayne.
Now its on to Sioux City, Iowa, for the tournaments final games. The Warriors will learn their pool and next opponent today.
On Saturday, Amber Birky had 12 kills and 10 digs for the Warriors. Teammate Ashley Hamilton had 11 kills and 20 digs. Erica Stouder had 10 kills.
Walsh was paced by Natalie Phillips 16 kills.
Cross country
Alex Stoltie of Indiana Tech placed 315th at the NAIA national championships in Vancouver, Wash. The freshman ran in 31 minutes, 2 seconds.
The winner, Silas Kisorio, a sophomore from Oklahoma Christian, finished in 24:23. McKendree freshman Carison Kemei was second in 24:24. Third place went to Malones Aaron Melhorn, who finished in 24:36.
