Colts out to avoid letdown vs. Ravens

Chances are people were still around the water cooler at work Friday, discussing the Colts’ dramatic 35-34 victory last Sunday over their rivals, the New England Patriots.

The Colts would like to move on.

Not usually a team to let down after a big victory, coach Jim Caldwell’s task has been keeping his Colts (9-0), one of two undefeated teams in the NFL, motivated heading into today’s game against the Baltimore Ravens (5-4).

The Ravens’ defense is ranked seventh, allowing 302.8 yards per game, and its offense is led by second-year quarterback Joe Flacco.

“(Flacco) is doing a great job. You can tell his maturity level. He just continues to get better,” Caldwell said. Flacco has thrown for 2,199 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. “He’s comfortable within the scheme of the offense. He certainly has the physical tools. He can make every throw.”

The Colts’ injury-riddled pass defense has allowed only seven touchdowns, second fewest in the NFL behind the New York Jets’ six, but rookie cornerbacks Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey will be tested again today.

Former Indiana and Miami Dolphins coach Cam Cameron is the Ravens’ offensive coordinator.

“I think (he’s) been good for our whole offense,” Flacco said. “He has certain ways of looking at things. I think we’ve done a good job of being able to do multiple things within our offense. I think we’re coming along at a good pace. We just need to make sure that we continue to get better week in and week out, and we don’t take a step back. I think this week is going to be a big week for that.”

More than anything, this game will be about the Colts’ offense, which ranks first in passing yards (315.1 yards per game), taking on the Ray Lewis-led Ravens defense. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning leads the NFL in passing yards (2,872) and passing touchdowns (20).

One more completion to Dallas Clark will be his 321st with the Colts, breaking John Mackey’s career mark for most receptions by a tight end.

“It’s quite an accomplishment when it does indeed happen,” Caldwell said. “Dallas is a guy who works extremely hard. He’s been a valuable weapon for us. … He’s a great guy to be around. He also is a fierce competitor. It also would be an incredible feat.”
