Hope looks ahead

Danny Hope spoke with reporters Monday in his final interview after the season, and he looked ahead at 2010.

Check out Wednesday's paper for a story, but here are some bits to hold you over until then:

  • Hope thought progress was made in 2009, especially considering where the offense started and finished. But he mostly talked about what improvements must be made for 2010, including limiting turnovers. Purdue had 29 this season.

"We did about as bad as you possibly can," Hope said. "I've never had that many turnovers as part of any football team."

Hope said having more detailed route-running will help limit turnovers next season.

  • Hope said the "door is open" for quarterback Justin Siller to return to the team but wouldn't say much else. Siller was dismissed from the university for one academic year for a violation of academic policy. His absence helped Joey Elliott emerge as the starting quarterback and allowed Caleb TerBush to get more reps during practice.
  • NFL scouts and executives have asked about Elliott, Hope said. Elliott threw for 3,026 yards in his first season as a starter and had plans to get into coaching after finishing his career. Hope said he hasn't spoken to either Keith Smith or Ryan Kerrigan about their potential pro futures, though he thinks Kerrigan will be an NFL player. Smith and Kerrigan are juniors. Kerrigan told me last week he intends to come back, and Smith talked after the Indiana game about preparing for spring practice.
  • Linebacker Jason Werner will apply for a sixth year of eligibility, Hope said. Werner missed two seasons with a back injury but bounced back to start every game in 2009 and was third on the team in tackles.
  • Most the coaching staff is recruiting now, and Hope will leave soon. After recruiting until February, the staff will come back to campus and start evaluating game tape from the 2009 season. The players will start light weight-lifting this week. The intense weight lifting and speed training will start after Christmas break.
