INDIANAPOLIS – Two men who rescued the driver of a burning propane tanker before it exploded on an Indianapolis highway ramp have received the Governor’s Heroism Award.
Gov. Mitch Daniels presented the award to Robert Skaggs of Fortville and Lonnie Hood of Acton on Tuesday in the governor’s office at the Statehouse.
Skaggs was driving in front of the tanker truck and watched in his rearview mirror as it overturned Oct. 22 on an Interstate 465 entrance ramp. Hood heard the crash while working at a nearby apartment complex.
The two rushed to the scene, remove the truck’s broken windshield, and pulled 73-year-old driver Ronald Tobias of Syracuse to safety just before the tanker exploded.
Daniels created the Heroism Award in 2007 and has given it out 15 times.
