Junior-college center picks IPFW for 2010

The first member of IPFW basketball coach Dane Fife’s 2010-11 recruiting class has signed.

Fife announced Tuesday that 6-foot-11 junior-college center Terrance Williams has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at IPFW. Before coming to Highland Park Community College, Williams played one season at SIU-Edwardsville. He played in 22 games and was second on the team in blocked shots (29) and field goal percentage (54.8).

In other IPFW basketball news, forward Deilvez Yearby was named the Summit League Player of the Week for Nov. 16 to 22 after averaging 16 points and 7.3 rebounds in three games. Yearby scored 20 points and had six rebounds in just 16 minutes against Madonna, scored 17 points and took nine boards against Washington State and had 11 points, seven boards, one steal and a blocked shot against Gonzaga.

Wizards owner Abe Pollin, 85, dies

Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin has died. He was 85. No details were disclosed. Pollin, the NBA’s longest-tenured owner, suffered from a rare brain disorder that impairs movement and balance. He had heart bypass surgery in 2005. Pollin owned the NHL’s Capitals until 1999 and the WNBA’s Mystics until 2005.

Luers boys ‘tipoff’ slated for Dec. 3

The two-time defending Class 2A state champion Bishop Luers boys basketball team will have an unofficial tipoff to their season Dec. 3 because of the football team’s state finals appearance. The Knights, with Mr. Basketball favorite Deshaun Thomas, will have a dunk contest, three-point shooting contest and an intra-squad scrimmage. The first official game will be Dec. 5 at home against Mishawaka Marian.

2 area coaches going shoeless

The coaches in the Elmhurst-Bishop Dwenger girls basketball game Dec. 5 will be barefoot in support of Samaritan’s Feet, a charitable organization that provides shoes to children and the poor around the world. Dave Scudder of Dwenger and Mark Redding of Elmhurst will coach without shoes and socks in the 7:45 p.m. game. Attendees are urged to bring cash donations or new athletic shoes to donate.

Concordia senior to sign with Bethel

Concordia senior Patrick Oetting will sign a letter of intent Monday to play college basketball at Bethel. Oetting averaged 7 points and 7.7 rebounds last season for the Cadets.

Colts re-sign end, release RB Hart

The Indianapolis Colts have re-signed defensive end Josh Thomas and waived running back Mike Hart. Thomas is a six-year veteran out of Syracuse who appeared in one game with the Colts this season.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has a concussion but is expected to play Sunday at Baltimore. … A person familiar with the Bills coaching search says two-time Super Bowl-winner Mike Shanahan is considered a legitimate candidate to take over the job. … Carolina lost linebacker Landon Johnson for the season after the former Purdue standout hurt his medial collateral ligament in Thursday’s loss to Miami. … Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw is wearing a protective boot on his sprained left ankle, and it’s uncertain whether he’ll make the trip for the team’s game Thursday at Denver. … Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris will call defensive plays for the Buccaneers after demoting defensive coordinator Jim Bates after a 1-9 start.

Former Komets goaltender retires

Goaltender Sebastien Laplante, who won a Turner Cup with the Komets last season, has retired from professional hockey. He was 1-3-2 with a 3.16 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage this season with the IHL’s last-place team, the Quad City Mallards.

Montreal outlasts Columbus at home

Marc-Andre Bergeron scored his second goal of the game 4:46 into the third, leading host Montreal to a 5-3 win over Columbus. Carey Price stopped 33 shots and Mike Cammalleri and Glen Metropolit also scored for Montreal.
