Badger named top offensive Big Ten player

Coaches award Boilers, Hoosiers 2nd-team honors

– Wisconsin running back John Clay, who leads the Big Ten in rushing, was chosen Monday as the conference’s offensive player of the year.

Clay, who has 1,224 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns with one game remaining in the regular season, was chosen in both the media and coaches’ poll.

Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones (media vote) and Penn State defensive tackle Jared Odrick (coaches) shared the Big Ten defensive player-of-the-year honors.

Coach of the Year went to Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, whose team finished 10-2 after a 9-0 start.

Wisconsin linebacker Chris Borland was named freshman of the year.

Purdue juniors Ryan Kerrigan and Keith Smith and seniors Brandon King and David Pender earned coaches’ second-team honors along with Indiana defensive lineman Jammie Kirlew, receiver Tandon Doss and tackle Rodger Saffold. Purdue’s Ken Plue, Carson Wiggs, Torri Williams and Indiana’s Ben Chappell, Ray Fisher and Matt Mayberry got coaches’ honorable mention.

Kerrigan, a defensive end, led the league with 13 sacks and seven forced fumbles and was fourth in tackles for loss (17.5). Smith, a receiver, was the only player in the conference to surpass 1,000 receiving yards. He caught a league-best 91 passes for 1,100 yards.

“(Smith) is a big, physical receiver with great hands and runs great routes and really understands football,” coach Danny Hope said. “We always knew Ryan was a really good player and had potential to be one of the top players. He has two things that make a difference – enough quickness and athleticism to make you miss and enough strength to overpower you.”

Odrick was also chosen defensive lineman of the year, and offensive lineman of the year went to Iowa tackle Bryan Bulaga.

Jones, the preseason Big Ten defensive player of the year, leads the conference with nearly 12 tackles per game and has nine sacks.

Odrick leads the Nittany Lions with six sacks and made 10 tackles for loss during the Nittany Lions’ 10-win season. He is part of a Penn State defensive unit that ranks among the top 10 nationally in three categories: scoring defense, total defense and rushing defense.

Ferentz was top coach for a third time. He was also won in 2002 and 2004.

Seven players repeated as first-team selections from 2008 – Jones, Odrick, Minnesota wide receiver Eric Decker, Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark, Nittany Lions’ linebacker Navorro Bowman, Wisconsin tight end Garrett Graham and Michigan punter Zoltan Mesko.
