Komets win wild 5-4 game

By Justin A. Cohn
The Journal Gazette

The Komets won a wild back-and-forth game with the Flint Generals, 5-4 Thursday night, in front of 8,243 at Memorial Coliseum.

The Komets never trailed in the game, but three times they saw the Generals whittle away at two-goal leads.

Ultimately, the winning goal was one I think should have been waved off. Keith Rodger was rushing the puck up the ice and it sure looked as if it was offsides. It wasn't ruled as so, though, and Rodger was able to drop the puck for Sean O'Connor's goal that made it 5-3.

The Generals got only one assist out of their NHLers, Bryan Smolinski, Pascal Rheaume and Tony Tuzzolino. And goalie Jean-Francois Labbe was bested on 24 of 29 shots.

I have this big question: Will Tim Haun hit a wall soon? He stopped 23 of 27 shots, but this was his seventh straight game in net. Now he faces the top-two teams in the league, Muskegon and Port Huron, the next two nights.

This is going to be a major test for him. Haun, by the way, got two assists.

I liked the toughness the Komets showed in this game, particularly from Bobby Phillips, who fought Tyler Willis after the goalie was hit. It was nice to see someone step in without thinking.

I also like what I'm seeing out of P.C. Drouin. He seems a little more fired up than he was a couple of weeks ago. And Justin Chwedoruk's energy is clearly having an effect on his new teammates.

I'm kind of perplexed by the Fort Wayne Komets so far this season. As of this morning (Friday, Nov. 27th) they are 10-4. Yet why do I have this sinking feeling that they are the worse than their record indicates? The game last night game may give me a clue. There were a lot of positves to take from the game last night. 1) They scored 5 goals, 2) five different players scored the goals, 3)Varone finally broke his goal scoring slump, and 4) Chwedoruk is the real thing and a great addition. There were some negatives also. 1) Haun gave up two pretty soft goals and with Boucher out it really puts the pressure on him, 2) they gave up another shorthanded goal, and 3) the Generals just completely controlled the third period last night, controlling the puck and play far beyond normalcy. My good friend Jack would tell me to show some patience, that we should wait until Christmas to be alarmed as rosters will change, the team will gell, and by then the league will have sorted themselves out. I think these next two games (road game against Muskegon, home game against Port Huron) will tell us a lot about the Fort Wayne Komets. If they win both we will be fine, if they lose both than this may be a long season.

Alan,
You're going to base the whole season on 2 games? Really? Sure, the guys are a little banged up right now, but considering that, they're playing great hockey right now. And IMO, there's no way you can base a whole 76-game season on 2 games. Even if they play around .500 during this stretch of guys being on the IR and Syro being in the AHL, once they get everyone back, they'll tear it up, there's little doubt in my mind about that. We've all seen the guys play, we should be thankful to have such a great team year in and year out. I guess what I'm trying to say is this: GO KOMETS!

AvatarI didn't see Little Willy after the fight either, he wasn't even on the bench. Maybe Phillips messed him up?

Nathan, thank you for your reply. Don't read my post and think I'm not grateful for the K's or not grateful that I am lucky enough to be a season ticket holder. Yes, looking at it from the outside it would seem absurd to believe you can deduce an entire season over a two game period. Yet, sometimes there are small segments during a season that can afford clues to the direction the team will take. I am well aware of the injury list. I am well aware of Syro being in the AHL. (I am beginning to believe that Syro will stay with Norfolk and will not be back.) I am just saying that as I have seen every home game this season I think this two game period is one of those times. I think if you asked Al Sims he would not agree that they are playing "great" hockey. For the most part, they are getting the job done. Remember that when MacMillan comes off suspension, Stayzer and Shafranov come off the IR, and IF Syro comes back, they will have to release four skaters. That is a 25% turnover on your roster. Do I think they are better than this? Yes. That is the reason I used the word "perplexed" when I started my last post.
