The widow of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy told Oprah Winfrey that even as her husband knew he was dying of brain cancer he had been “in training” to make sure he had enough strength to attend President Obama’s inauguration.

Vicki Kennedy said she wouldn’t try to run for her late husband’s former U.S. Senate seat and described how he battled brain cancer – but she would not talk about the last thing he said to her before dying.

“I think I’ll just keep that one to myself,” she told Winfrey on a segment of Wednesday’s “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” “It was an inspiration, really, to watch how Teddy grappled with such a grave diagnosis and always looked forward with hope.”

Bail for Polanski

Roman Polanski was granted $4.5 million bail Wednesday, clearing the way for the fugitive director to move within days from a Swiss jail to house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Alpine resort chalet.

The Swiss Justice Minister said she saw no reason to appeal the surprise decision by the Swiss Criminal Court. Polanski would have to remain in Switzerland as authorities assess whether to extradite him to the U.S. for having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl.

The court said Polanski, 77, would be subjected to “constant electronic surveillance” and an alarm would be activated if he leaves the premises, adding that the filmmaker was still viewed as a high flight risk.

Singer will sing again

Julie Andrews is to perform in London, 30 years after her last appearance on the British stage.

Concert promoter AEG Europe said the star of the musicals “Mary Poppins” and “The Sound of Music” will appear at London’s O2 Arena on May 8.

Andrews had non-cancerous throat nodules removed in 1997. The operation initially left her unable to sing.

Andrews says in a statement that “to perform once again in my homeland on the London stage will be a wonderful moment – it is where it all began for me, and I am so excited to be able to share a brand-new work with audiences.”
