Bishop Luers freshman Jaylon Smith matched his older brother in the Knights' 24-17 win over Monrovia in the Class 2A state title game Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Big bro Rod, a senior at Harding, also won a Class 2A state championship as a freshman in 2006. Rod Smith, the No. 8 all-time leading rusher in state history, never made it back to get a second ring.
Jaylon Smith is hoping to get another chance.
"I got three more years to go," Jaylon Smith said.
The Knights have several freshmen and sophomores on both offense and defense so a return to the state championship game isn't out of the question.
Luers made four straight trips to the state title game in 1999-2002 and won three championships.
"The age itself is pretty unique," said Bishop Luers coach Matt Lindsay, who was won seven titles. "We had some freshman out here making plays. We had an interesting blend of young men. We are excited about now, and we are excited about the future, that's for sure."
