Cougars men stage late rally

Call this the one that got away, only with an alternate ending.

Saint Francis’ men’s basketball team blew an 18-point second-half lead, then rallied to beat Rio Grande 98-90 Saturday at the Mid-South Conference Challenge at Frankfort, Ky. Qadr Owens led four Cougars in double figures with 21, including a driving jumper in the lane with 1:21 to play that regained the lead for good for Saint Francis.

The Cougars led 63-45 with 15:44 to play, but Rio Grande rallied to take an 87-86 lead with 2:02 left.

Men

INDIANA TECH 72, GOSHEN 71: Goshen missed a last-second shot and host Tech survived. Mike Bobby led the Warriors with 21 points and James Hicks (14), Ashton Foster (13) and Shaun Cabrera (10) also hit double figures for Tech, which overcame 39 percent shooting.

UC DAVIS 60, BALL STATE 58: A late 12-2 run erased a six-point Cardinals lead and enabled the Aggies to win in Muncie. The Cardinals (2-2) were led by freshman Jauwan Scaife with 14 points and Terrence Watson with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

TAYLOR 84, PURDUE-CALUMET 75, OT: The host Trojans outscored winless Calumet 18-9 in the extra session. The Trojans put five players in double figures, led by Casey Coons (22 points) and Tommy Peller (20).

HUNTINGTON 79, SAINT XAVIER 73: The Foresters shot just 38 percent but outrebounded Saint Xavier 41-30 to win in Chicago. Tyler Shively scored 24 points Kevin Kyle had 13 points and 13 rebounds for Huntington.

Women

INDIANA WESLEYAN 67, INDIANA TECH 48: At Marion, unbeaten Wesleyan (7-0) blew it open early, rolling to a 44-15 halftime lead and holding Tech to 6-of-24 shooting in the first half. Julie Stetzel led Tech with nine points.

SOUTHERN INDIANA 76, SAINT FRANCIS

61: The Cougars led 34-31 at halftime but were outscored 45-27 in the second half. Meghan Prible scored 15 points to lead the Cougars, and Chanell Ridley (14) and Kayla Mullins (11) also hit double figures.

TAYLOR 82,WALSH 81, OT: The No. 23 Trojans trailed by 17 with 14:14 to play in Canton, Ohio, before rallying to avert the upset in overtime. Tess Randolph scored 26 points Bethany Ballard 24 for Taylor.

TRINE 57, ANDERSON 47: The Thunder shot 55 percent in the second half to erase a four-point halftime deficit and win going away at Trine. Kristen Julian scored 21 points and Danielle Senf 18 for the Thunder.

OGLETHORPE 82, MANCHESTER 77: A 19-6 run to begin the second half erased a 46-37 Manchester lead and set the stage for Oglethorpe’s win at the Thomas More Julie Costello Memorial Classic at Oglethorpe. Kailey Honn led winless Manchester with 21 points.
