1 killed in shooting; no suspect, motive

One man is dead after a shooting on the city’s southeast side Sunday night, according to Fort Wayne police.

Police were called about 10:30 p.m. to the 2800 block of Schele Avenue, near McCormick Place apartments. Neighbors had called police after reportedly hearing gunshots and then seeing a man lying in the street. That man was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim was not released pending an autopsy and family notification.

Some witnesses told police they saw a dark-colored truck leaving the area after they heard the gunshots.

Police said they have no suspect description or motive in the killing.

Stores, inn robbed; police probe link

Fort Wayne police investigated two robberies over the weekend but are uncertain whether they are related, according to officer John Chambers, police spokesman.

Boudoir Noir, 512 W. Superior St., was robbed just after 4 p.m. Saturday. A man entered the business, demanded money and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Chambers did not have details Sunday on whether the man was armed. A complete description of the robber was not available.

Another robbery was reported just after 4 p.m. Sunday at the Guesthouse Inn at 3017 Coliseum Blvd. W. A man entered the inn armed with a handgun and demanded money. He left, heading west on Coliseum Boulevard with an undisclosed amount of cash. That man was described as in his 20s, 5-foot-7, white, wearing black sunglasses and a black hooded sweat shirt.

Couple arrested in DWI; children were in vehicles

A Defiance couple were arrested in Defiance on Saturday morning after they were found driving while intoxicated along with children in their cars, according to troopers at the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Defiance Post.

Just before 2 a.m. Saturday, David Bellaire was pulled over for a left-of-center violation as he was driving along Hammersmith Road, troopers said. Troopers said they determined Bellaire was intoxicated – and his 11-year-old daughter was in the car.

As Bellaire was being arrested, his wife, Marcia, was found parked on Singer Road. Troopers said she was also intoxicated. The couple’s 10-year-old daughter was a passenger in her car. Both husband and wife were arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and child endangerment, troopers said.

Ligonier fire damages apartments, coffee shop

A Ligonier apartment building sustained heavy damage to at least one unit after a fire Saturday night, according to Fire Chief Jeremy Weaver.

The fire was reported just after 5:30 p.m. Saturday in an apartment above Brenda’s Coffee Shop, at 314 Cavin St. Several people were in the apartment at the time – including children – who are believed to have started the fire accidentally with a lighter, Weaver said.

At least three apartments were damaged in the blaze. The apartment where the fire started sustained heavy fire damage, while two other units sustained minor damage. The coffee shop incurred minor smoke damage, Weaver said.

8-year-old boy upgraded after hunting accident

An 8-year-old Howard County boy wounded in a hunting accident Saturday is doing better, according to hospital officials.

Deputies said Jacob Weaver of Greentown was in a tree stand hunting with his father, Glen Weaver, when the accident happened.

The shooting was reported about 7:30 a.m. in a wooded area south of 9935 W. County Road 900 South.

The boy accidentally kicked the shotgun, knocking it over. The gun discharged, striking him in the left side of the chest.

The boy was critically wounded. His condition had improved to serious but stable Sunday at Fort Wayne’s Parkview Hospital. Police said no charges will be filed.
