Another rumored candidate to fill Notre Dame's vacant head coaching position has tried to end speculation that he will take over the Irish.

Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp told the Associated Press he was staying with the Longhorns when he was informed his name was mentioned as a possible replacement for Charlie Weis.

Muschamp is in his second season with Texas, which plays Nebraska for the Big 12 championship Saturday, and his contract puts him in line to replace Longhorns coach Mack Brown.

Brown has seven years left on his current contract and said he doesn't plan to retire.

Muschamp joins Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and Florida coach Urban Meyer as coaches who said they are staying in their current positions rather than going to Notre Dame.

Irish athletic director Jack Swarbrick said the school had not contacted any coaches before the announcement of Weis' firing Monday.

Swarbrick said any coach turning down Notre Dame before Monday didn't matter because the university had not offered the job to anyone before Weis was officially let go.

"Let's let the process run its course where we can talk to the people we have a strong interest in and see what reaction we get," Swarbrick said.
