Indiana lost by 25 to Wake Forest in last year's Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
This year, the Hoosiers fell to Maryland 80-68.
Tom Crean said those two games show the progress the program has made.
"I know that I need everyone to accept that we are young and that we are in the second year of trying to rebuild from a train wreck. But I'm not in (the locker room) accepting it and there is a big, big difference. As the coach of this basketball team, my job is to keep driving them to higher levels than they think they are capable at this point. Obviously we have a long way to go with that, but we will get there."
IU couldn't shoot straight down the stretch. The game was tied at 54 with less than nine minutes to go. IU made three field goals the rest of the way.
Maryland used a zone defense to slow down IU after it got off to a fast start.
"We thought we could attack their pressure and that's what we wanted to do and we were doing that," Crean said. "We got what we wanted in the zone, but we did not make the next pass. We were making the next pass early on."
