And Another Thing

Let the speculatin' begin

I have it from on absolute authority that the next football coach at Notre Dame will not be Knute Rockne.

A very good source close to the university told me Rockne turned it down because he's dead.

So, there's one name you can cross of your list. All other names are still in play, thanks to athletic director Jack Swarbrick's gift for keeping a lid on things.

Brian Kelly?

In play.

Bob Stoops?

In play.

Tony Dungy, Tony Sparano, Tony Soprano, Tony Stewart?

In play.

You've gotta love this whole process, if you enjoy watching media types tie themselves in knots. Everybody thinks they know something. Nobody really knows anything.

Well, except for me. I know lots.

I know Rockne's out, Charlie Weis is out and Bill Belichick is probably out. Eric Mangini, however, has expressed interest. And everybody thinks Swarbrick was out in California on Saturday to talk to Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, but I have it from a very good source close to the university that he was out there to talk to someone else, and that it is, in fact, a done deal.

Your next coach at Notre Dame is ... Pete Carroll!

Ha. Had you goin' there for a second.
