Plans are under way for an addition to the main location of the LaGrange County Public Library.
The Library Board voted, 5-2, to order the partners of the architectural firm Kelty Tappy of Fort Wayne, Matt Kelty and Jeff Tappy, to not attend Library Board meetings. They are to be represented by one of their junior architects, Zachary Evans.
Two members of the Library Board, Martin Franke and Steve McKowen, introduced a motion to terminate the contract of Kelty Tappy with the Library Board. That motion was defeated 5-2.
Not one of the Library Board members will state why Kelty and Tappy are not allowed to attend their meetings, nor will the board members state why a move was made to terminate the contract with Kelty Tappy. The board members will only state that their attorney on the library project has instructed them to keep quiet and say nothing to the public.
The public has a right to know.
The Library Board has paid Kelty Tappy $345,000, which includes about $80,000 for their work on the new Topeka branch library. So $265,000 has been paid on the main library project without one shovelful of dirt being turned.
It is time to call a screeching halt to this project until questions about this multimillion-dollar project are fully investigated. The property taxpayers and residents of LaGrange County deserve nothing less.
