Rod Smith missing from All-State team

It caught me as strange to see Rod Smith's name missing from the Associated Press All-State team, announced Wednesday.

The Harding senior running back was on the honorable mention list for 3A, but was not among the top two running backs named.

Now I know how tough it is to name these All-State teams, with my involvement with the 4A team.

But leaving Smith off the list is a tough one to take. The Ohio State recruit is the state's No. 8 all-time leading rusher with over 6,620 career yards, including 1,855 this year.

Smith didn't have a great year in some regards, but he bettered his effort as a freshman, 1,800, to get a single-season career high, and he played outstanding defense at safety.

This kid could be playing in the Big Ten next year at the premier football program in that league.

I will continue to scratch my head over that one.
