Five former Fort Wayne players rank among the top 10 prospects by Baseball America in the San Diego Padres organization entering 2010.
Right-handed pitcher Simon Castro and infielder James Darnell – the organization’s minor league pitcher and player of the year – are Nos. 2 and 3 on the list. Outfielder Jaff Decker, left-hander Cory Luebke and right-hander Wynn Pelzer are 4, 6 and 7.
Castro pitched the first no-hitter in franchise history and is expected to be the No. 2 starter for the Padres in 2013, according to Baseball America.
Darnell hit .311 with 20 home runs and 81 RBI between Fort Wayne and Lake Elsinore last season.
Three 19-year-olds on the top 10 list – outfielders Donovan Tate and Everett Williams and infielder Edinson Rincon -- have yet to play at Class A.
