Youngblood will brighten your day

By Justin A. Cohn
The Journal Gazette

I was out at McMillen Arena yesterday and was really saddened to learn that so many young hockey players haven't seen "Youngblood."

For them, hockey movies began with "The Mighty Ducks."

Sad. Scary. I'm getting old.

Anyway, my gift to you is this extended clip from the second-greatest hockey movie of all time behind, of course, "Slap Shot."

  • As for some other fun stuff, the Komets have a cool promotion coming up: Wednesday's game against the Port Huron Icehawks will be the first "Wild Wednesday Game" of the season. Presented by the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, there will be a booth in the Coliseum lobby with live animals and chances to win prizes.
  • The Mallards' Juris Stals is trying to make it to the Olympics: Click here to read about it.
  • Bloomington's Ryan Finnerty is bolting to Europe: Click here.
  • Lots of great names on this list from Greg Rajan -- click here. Lots of familiar ones, too. But how is Robin Big Snake not at the top of the list?
  • Ouch: Click here.

Justin A. Cohn, pro sports coordinator for The Journal Gazette, has been covering the Fort Wayne Komets since 1997. His reporting includes game stories from home and away, features about the players and personalities associated with the Komets, plus coverage of issues affecting hockey at all levels. A native of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Cohn graduated from Emory University in Atlanta. He can be reached at 260-461-8429 or by email at jcohn@jg.net.

AvatarNever seen Youngblood, might have to Netflix it. Loved the list of names, the one that I always found funny is Pierre-Luc Leblond-Letournau. Not sure on the last name, I might have it backwards, but I think one hyphen per person is enough!

AvatarI've never seen Youngblood either....of course, I've never seen Slapshot all the way through, just the good clips. My excuse for that is I have a kid who wants to watch it with me, and I have to get him out of the house to watch it, so I have heard. Any sitters? LOL...

Youngblood is my all time favorite movie! I've got my 4 year old nephew stuck on it now. Just gotta teach him what's okay to repeat, lol. Way better than Slapshot in my opinion.

AvatarI bought a copy of it at Walmart. They had it in their $5 bin after Patrick Swayze passed. Still haven't gotten to watch it, though. Maybe I'll get a chance around Christmas with my housemates gone. They don't let me watch my hockey movies when they're here.
