Blaze guts home after kitchen fire

Two people escaped a fire on the city’s southeast side Monday afternoon.

Fort Wayne firefighters were called to 4514 Weisser Park Ave. at 2:04 p.m. to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the house.

At the time of the fire, two family members were home but were alerted by smoke detectors and the smell of smoke, according to a written statement from the fire department. They got out of the house before firefighters arrived.

One resident was treated at the scene, the department said. It said the one-story house sustained heavy fire and smoke damage.

The fire was ruled an accident caused by unattended food on the stove.
