A man who police believe played a role in the shooting death of a pizza deliveryman last week was in custody Tuesday night on a separate robbery charge.
Andre Washington, 20, of the 2600 block of Pittsburg Street, was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail at the Allen County Lockup.
Washington is a suspect in the robbery and slaying of Ian Crace, 32, Fort Wayne police said.
Crace was delivering a pizza Nov. 29 in the 2800 block of Schele Avenue on the city’s southeast side when he was robbed and shot to death. Washington is the second suspect in the slaying to be arrested on a separate charge.
No one has been charged in the slaying.
Washington is charged with robbing Advance Auto Parts at 4309 Lafayette St. on Nov. 30, the day after Crace was killed.
While investigating the Advance Auto Parts holdup, police noticed similarities in that robbery and a robbery at Dairy Queen at 412 Southview Ave. on Nov. 28. In both cases, the robbers were similarly dressed and one of them slashed a victim with a knife, court documents filed Tuesday in Allen Superior Court said.
At Advance Auto Parts, Washington slashed a man behind the counter with a knife, and about $500 was taken from the business, court documents said.
Police noticed a striking resemblance when comparing Washington’s photo with video evidence from the Dairy Queen robbery, and Washington was identified in the Advance Auto Parts robbery, court documents said.
Police believe the same people robbed both businesses, court records said. Washington, however, is charged with robbing only Advance Auto Parts.
No one else has been charged in the two business robberies.
Last week, police named Washington and Deangelo Bennett, as suspects in Crace’s slaying.
Bennett, 18, of 2000 block of Oxford Street, was arrested last week on a charge of failing to appear in court on an unrelated misdemeanor charge. He posted $1,500 bond and was released.
Police Chief Rusty York said detectives interviewed Bennett but did not have enough evidence to arrest him in the slaying case.
