A look at Brian Kelly

Brian Kelly brings an impressive resume to Notre Dame after stops at Cincinnati, Central Michigan and Division II Grand Valley State.

"I am confident that he will have even greater success here," Rev. John I. Jenkins, Notre Dame's president, said in a news release announcing Kelly as the new Irish coach.

Here's a look at some of Kelly's coaching accomplishments and how Cincinnati fared in some major statistical categories:

  • Three seasons at Cincinnati from 2007-09, including a 34-6 record (.850) and two straight outright BIG EAST Conference title teams that earned BCS appearances in 2008 (Orange Bowl) and '09 (Sugar Bowl).

  • Three seasons at Central Michigan University from 2004-06, including a 19-16 overall record (.542) that featured a 9-4 mark and Mid-American Conference title in 2006.

  • Thirteen seasons at Grand Valley State University from 1991-2003, including a 118-35-2 record (.767) that was highlighted by NCAA Division II national championships in 2002 (14-0) and 2003 (14-1).

  • An overall record of 171-57-2 (.747) in those 19 seasons as a head coach.

  • Named Home Depot National Coach of the Year for 2009

  • First three-time winner of Big East Coach of the Year, collecting the award in all three of his seasons with the Bearcats

  • 2-1 bowl record with the Bearcats, defeating Western Michigan 27-24 in the International Bowl after the 2006 season and defeating Southern Mississippi 31-21 in the Papajohns.com Bowl after the 2007 season and losing to Virginia Tech 20-7 in the Orange Bowl after the 2008 season

  • Went 11-4 in the Division II playoffs with Grand Valley State, which is located in Allendale, Mich., winning the 2002 and 2003 national championships
