Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry on Thursday officially purchased Renaissance Square despite concerns from members of his task force looking at city and county office-space solutions.

The city closed on the $7.3 million purchase of the 220,000-square-foot office building at 200 E. Berry St. Thursday afternoon. The purchase comes a little more than a week before a 10-person task force meets for the first time to discuss office-space issues for the city and Allen County governments.

The City Council approved the purchase in August, and then gave the OK on financing for the purchase and future renovations in October.

But members of the task force questioned the timing of the acquisition. City Council President Tom Smith, R-1st, said he was disappointed the mayor closed on the purchase before the group met. He said the agreement allowed the city to wait until the end of the month to complete the deal.
