Assistant to Weis leaves Irish

Corwin Brown’s tenure at Notre Dame ended Tuesday.

“I’m just cleaning out my office,” Brown told IrishIllustrated.com. “I had a good time here. I’ve got a lot of good memories. It was a true learning experience.”

Brown is the second coach to leave the program since Charlie Weis was fired Nov. 30.

Brian Kelly was named Notre Dame’s coach Thursday; his first day at the university was Monday.

Rob Ianello, the Irish receivers coach and recruiting coordinator the last five seasons, was named head coach at Akron on Dec. 9.

Brown was the defensive coordinator for Notre Dame in 2007 and 2008.

He also coached the linebackers in ’07 and handled the defensive backs in ’08.

Before this season, Brown was promoted to associate head coach.

He also coached the defensive backs and was co-defensive coordinator with Jon Tenuta.

Notre Dame struggled on defense this season.

The Irish (6-6) finished 87th in total defense, giving up 397.8 yards per game, and were 64th in scoring defense, giving up 25.9 points per game.

Notre Dame gave up 227.5 passing yards per game, 76th in the nation, this season.

Brown’s squads in 2007 and 2008 each finished 39th in the country in total defense.

In 2008, Notre Dame gave up an average of 329.9 yards and 22.2 points and finished with a 7-6 record.

The Irish were second in the nation in pass defense in 2007, giving up an average of 161.6 passing yards. Notre Dame gave up 357 yards and 28.8 points per game as the Irish finished 3-9.

Notre Dame went 16-21 during Brown’s three years with the program.

Brown was the defensive backs coach for the New York Jets from 2004 to ’06 and was the special teams coach at Virginia from 2001 to ’03.

Brown told IrishIllustrated.com he was looking at job opportunities at the college and professional level, but he would not go into details.

Kelly spoke with members from Weis’ staff Monday, and he was scheduled to talk to members of his staff from Cincinnati on Tuesday, according to reports.
