Defiance woman dies after crash on snowy roads

Snow-covered roads claimed the life of a Defiance, Ohio, woman Saturday morning after she was crushed by her van when it rolled on top of her, police said.

Joyce Herr, 81, was driving north on Ohio 15 when her van began to fishtail shortly before 7 a.m. The 1999 Plymouth Voyager rolled three times when it slid off the right side of the road hit a utility pole about two miles south of Ney, Ohio, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Herr, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and the van rolled on top of her.

It came to a rest on its wheels next to her. She died at the scene, police said.

If Herr had been wearing a seat belt, she wouldn’t have been thrown from her van and would not have sustained the fatal injuries, according to police.
