Below-freezing temperatures contributed to dozens of crashes in northeast Indiana on Saturday night, including an eight-vehicle pileup in Steuben County that closed a portion of Interstate 69, police said.
None of the crashes involved serious injuries. As the temperature dropped, area roads – made wet by Saturdays snowfall – became ice patches, causing the bulk of the crashes.
The Steuben pileup was reported about 5:30 p.m. Saturday and kept both southbound lanes of the interstate closed near the Angola exit for 2 1/2 hours, according to Steuben County sheriffs deputies.
Some southbound travelers were detoured onto U.S. 20 from I-69.
Farther south, Allen County police said they handled at least two dozen crashes, most of which were on Interstate 469 and U.S. 30. Fort Wayne police reported about four dozen fender benders that kept officers and dispatchers busy.
In Huntington County, sheriffs deputies were handling six vehicles that had slid off major roads, including several tractor-trailer rigs. The bulk of those crashes were on I-69.
Todays high temperature is expected to be in the lower 30s, the National Weather Service said. An additional inch of snow is expected this evening.
