Irish give coach perfect gift: Easy win

– Coach Mike Brey got just about everything he wanted from Notre Dame’s final non-conference game: outstanding shooting, great passing and even some decent defense.

He didn’t mind that Bucknell didn’t provide much of a challenge for the Irish as they head into Big East play next week.

“I’m taking that going into Christmas,” he said.

“We’ve had a lot of different things happen. So you have a pretty good gauge of how guys react to things.”

The Irish didn’t have to react too much Tuesday night, jumping to a 27-point halftime lead against Bucknell and winning 101-69.

Luke Harangody had 20 points and 11 rebounds for his 56th career double-double, tying LaPhonso Ellis (1988-92) for the school record.

“Just another amazing milestone for him,” Brey said.

Tory Jackson became the fourth Irish player to compile 1,000 career points and 500 assists.

The three others are Chris Thomas, David Rivers and Elmer Bennett.

“When you score 1,000 points, you’ve had one heck of a college career,” Brey said.

Jackson said he is pleased to be associated with such Notre Dame standouts.

“A lot of good guards have come through here, and to even be mentioned with them, be in the same rank with them, to have those kinds of stats, I’m very, very thankful,” he said.

“But we’ve got a lot of basketball to play. I’m glad we got this one over with.”

Ben Hansbrough, who was playing with the flu, added 16 points and five assists for the Irish (11-2), and Tim Abromaitis had 15 points.

The Irish dominated from the start, hitting their first five shots to open a 15-4 lead while the Bison were just 2 of 12 from the floor.

By the time the Irish missed their first two-point shot, a jumper inside by Abromaitis, they were ahead 29-12.

In the first half, the Irish made nine three-pointers and shot 63 percent while the Bison shot just 24 percent.

“I thought we had some pretty good looks early on, especially in the first half, that we didn’t make,” Bucknell coach Dave Paulsen said.

“That kind of had us come unglued a little bit, and it was a train wreck after that.”

Bryson Johnson scored 17 points for Bucknell (4-8), which lost its fifth straight, and Stephen Tyree added 15 points.

The Irish shot a season-high 61 percent for the game, the ninth time this season they have shot 50 percent or better.

Harangody said it was a good game for the Irish, who were coming off a win over UCLA.

“With Christmas break coming up here, you never know how the team is going to come out,” he said.

“I thought we did a great job of concentrating and kind of put it away right away.”
