Americans produce 25 percent more trash over the holidays than during the rest of the year, according to the Allen County Solid Waste Management District.
To curb waste this season, the district is encouraging people to recycle old electronics, Christmas trees and other holiday items.
Christmas trees can be recycled today through Jan. 15 at the following locations:
Fort Wayne
Allen County Highway Garage, 2234 Carroll Road; Foster Park West soccer field; Foellinger Theatre back parking lot; Conklin Pavilion at Shoaff Park; and the pool parking lot at McMillen Park
Monroeville
Monroeville Community Park parking lot
New Haven
Jury Park; Meadowbrook School parking lot; and City Hall
Woodburn
Under the water tower on Front Street
Leo-Cedarville
Corner of Grabill and Schwartz roads
Electronics, including computers, televisions, CD players, stereo receivers, tape decks, video game consoles, VCRs and DVD players, can be recycled at OmniSource, 1143 Fairview Ave.
The following holiday items can be dropped off at recycling locations or placed in curbside recycling bins: non-metallic wrapping paper; non-metallic gift bags with removed handles; cardboard with clear plastic windows; gift boxes; aluminum foil and food trays; greeting cards; envelopes; gift cards; tags; and calendars with the coils removed.
The following holiday items cannotbe recycled: shiny metallic-coated wrapping paper and gift bags; tissue paper; ribbons, bows, beads, string, garland and tinsel; rigid plastic packaging; bubble wrap and Styrofoam; and disposable cups and tableware.
