The Fremont Fire Department was called to 7740 N. Old U.S. 27 at 7:48 a.m. to find smoke coming from all four sides of the basement, according to a written statement.

Firefighters entered the home, but the fire had burned a large hole through the floor at the entrance. They went to the rear of the home and had the basement fire under control shortly after 9 a.m.

There were no injuries, the statement said.

Assisting at the scene, which is near the Michigan state line, were Angola Fire Department, Lakeland Fire Department, Steuben County EMS, Steuben County Sheriff Department, Michigan State Police, the Montgomery Fire Department (which stood by Fremont's fire station) and Steuben County Communications.

The fire department said the house and its contents had about $100,000 in damage.
