Kelly to name Martin to staff, reports say

Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly is expected to name Grand Valley State coach Chuck Martin his defensive backs coach, according to reports.

Martin, who was first reported to be named to Kelly's first Irish staff by the Grand Rapids Press, began his career under Kelly as Grand Valley's defensive backs coach.

Martin was the Lakers defensive coordinator under Kelly in 2003 and was named Grand Valley's head coach after Kelly left for Central Michigan in 2004.

Martin won Division II national titles in 2005 and 2006 and finished runner-up this season. He went 74-7 in six seasons with the Lakers.

Martin will be taking over a secondary that struggled last season. The Irish were 76th in pass defense, giving up 227.5 passing yards per game, and gave up 17 passing touchdowns.

"Chuck is a man that should be on anybody's list because he's just a great football coach," Kelly said at his introductory news conference Dec. 11.
