Unwrapped

Sitting in a heap of wrapping paper, I was surrounded by some truly fabulous gifts - Lily of the Valley body lotion from Crabtree & Evelyn, a giant handbag from Von Maur, earrings made by a local artist. I felt like one of the luckiest girls in the world. (I would have been the luckiest had Santa brought me the grey Classic Cardy boots from Ugg.)

But not everyone is so lucky.

I have heard of mothers-in-law giving baby clothes before such a child is even conceived much less born or risque night clothes to get the couple on the right track.

So as we put away our stockings and revel in our new goodies, I think it's necessary to advise misguided in-laws about what not to get us gals next year.

First and foremost, as listed above, please avoid anything to do with babies and baby-making. Choosing to have a child is a PERSONAL decision. It is also something that isn't always easy for a couple. Such gifts put too much pressure on a couple and could come off as insensitive if the couple is having trouble conceiving. Also, it's a little creepy to say, "Hey, baby, do you like my nightgown? Your mom bought it for me."

Appliances. I know your son likes paninis, waffles, quesadillas, etc. but if he likes them so much, give the gift to him. Don't expect me to make them.

A Snuggie. I know you have seen the commercials so many times that they are beginning to look somewhat cute. Guess what? They're not. And if you really want those grandbabies, a Snuggie will be of no help.

Scented bath products. I know, I know. Gift sets from that mall store are so convenient and cute. It just screams "great gift" ... for people you sort of know. You should know me - I'm married to your son. Unless I make a request, I'll keep my scents about me.

Generic holiday decorations. Yeah, those snowman towels are cute. Yes, they will look lovely in my bathroom. However, see the note about scented bath products.

It's all about thought, you mothers-in-law out there. A cute handbag if she is always gabbing about the stylish satchel she saw at the store. If she's a coffee addict, get her a gift card to her favorite java joint. A massage certificate is always appreciated if she has a stressful job.

And, if all ideas fail, ask your son. Please. He should know what she really wants.
