Fireable offense

Texas Tech cans Leach, but not why you think

This just in: Texas Tech has fired football coach Mike Leach "with cause, effective immediately."

Show of hands from all of you who think they did it because he allegedly locked up Craig James' injured kid for hours at a time in either a storage shed, a utility closet or the bathroom of a Lubbock-to-El Nowhere commuter plane, depending on which version is currently being reported.

You're wrong. Craig James' kid and his slight concussion -- and Leach's bizarre way of dealing with him -- has very little to do with this.

From all indications, it's just the trigger event that enabled Tech to do what it's been itching to do since Leach held the school up for a bank-breaking contract extension summer, then publicly courted Washington when that job came open.

Tech's been wanting to show him the road since. In other words, it's a personal thing. In further other words, it's personal between Leach and the Tech AD, who apparently see eye-to-eye about as well as Mini-Me and Yao Ming.
