Heavy snow forecast in region

Kosciusko County

The National Weather Service has issued a lake-effect snow watch for portions of northeast Indiana.

Heavy snow is forecast to develop late Thursday and persist through the weekend for and area that includes northwest Indiana and Kosciusko County. The weather service said the strongest bands will be capable of producing snowfall rates of up to 2 inches an hour.

The heaviest snowfall is expected to be close to Lake Michigan where more than a foot of new snow is possible by late Sunday.

Winds of 15 to 25 mph in the heavier snow bands might cause whiteout conditions, the weather service said.

The watch area also includes Elkhart and Marshall counties and the communities of Nappanee, Warsaw, Winona lake, Syracuse and Mentone.

The weather service said there is likely to be localized snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an – with a total of about 8 inches – over portions of Elkhart, northern Marshall and northern Kosciusko counties.

LaGrange, Steuben, Noble, DeKalb, Whitley counties

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for LaGrange, Steuben, Noble, DeKalb and Whitley.

The National Weather Service said those counties are likely to see lake-effect snow showers beginning Friday and continuing through the weekend.

Allen, Wabash, Huntington, Wells, Adams, Williams, Defiance, Paulding, Van Wert counties

The weather service said no hazardous weather is expected in Allen, Wabash, Huntington, Wells and Adams counties in Indiana or Williams, Defiance, Paulding and Van Wert counties in Ohio.

Snow and drizzle are predicted tonight and more is forecast through the weekend.
