Well, now. That's what I call "separation."
By which I mean, Gilbert Arenas has truly separated himself in the still-infant 2010 Idiot of the Year race, threatening to wrap it up earlier than any previous Idiot in history.
I mean, six days, man. That is strong.
That's how long it's taken Arenas to turn one brainless act -- taking guns into an NBA locker room -- into an entire mini-series. Consider: First he takes guns into an NBA locker room, then he tries to laugh it off. Then he tries to really laugh it off by pantomiming "shooting" his teammates with his index fingers before a game against Philadelphia.
The man would be the dumbest human on the planet if he hadn't been beaten to it by that woman who got arrested in Toledo for punching a drive-thru window at McDonald's because they were out of McNuggets.
Anyway ... now an enraged David Stern has suspended him indefinitely without pay, declaring Arenas (ouch) "not currently fit to take the court." And who can blame him?
* Arenas is yukking it up about guns while playing for a team that changed its name from the "Bullets" because it thought, correctly, that it was distasteful given the gun violence taking place on the Washington streets at the time. Could there be anything more inappropriate?
* He's making light of a situation that in and of itself probably was a prank gone horribly awry, but that nonetheless goes directly to the perpetually shaky image of the NBA. Could there be anything worse for the league's image than a player not only horsing around with guns in the locker room but laughing about? You think there's any player in the league who's not supremely ticked at Arenas for jeopardizing their marketing opportunities?
It's going to be a long, long time before Arenas ever sees an NBA floor again. If ever.
