Indiana's Faith Sherrill, a Northrop graduate, was named the Big Ten female field athlete of the week Monday.
Sherrill opened the 2010 indoor season by posting the nation's best mark in the shot put while breaking an IU record at the Indiana Open on Saturday.
Sherrill recorded a toss of 16.70m (54-9.5). The mark is a foot and a half better than the second best in the Big Ten so far this season. The IU mark stood for 18 years.
She also posted a career best in the weight throw, adding nearly four feet to her previous high with a toss of 18.34m (60-2). The throw moves her from sixth to fourth in the IU records. She is now within two inches of leading the Big Ten in the weight throw as well. This is the first weekly award for Sherrill.IU’s Derek Drouin was named the male field athlete of the week for his performances in the high jump and long jump.
