The state is examining the best way to relieve current and projected congestion at the Interstate 69-Dupont Road interchange – including the construction of another interchange north on the freeway.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has hired DLZ Indiana to survey land north of the Dupont Road interchange to examine possible ways to improve traffic flow, said Toni Mayo, INDOT spokeswoman.
Notices were sent to potentially affected property owners last month, but Mayo said it is too early for people to be worried about losing their homes. "Just because there is a stake in their yard does not mean there is going to be a project in their yard," she said.
At issue is growing traffic congestion on Dupont during rush hour. Mayo said the state projects daily traffic will jump from 17,000 to 35,000 vehicles by 2030. This will be caused in part by the expansion of the nearby Parkview North hospital campus.
The state has previously said it was examining building an interchange off Hursh Road, about three miles north of Dupont, but Mayo said she can't say what the final decision will be.
"INDOT is just beginning to explore the best traffic solution," she said.
After the surveying work is done in four to six weeks, Mayo said the consultant will report on its findings. There is no schedule yet for future action. Any decision would include a public hearing, Mayo said.
