Suspect charged in West Main shooting

Fort Wayne Police have made an arrest in last night's shooting on West Main Street in which a Fort Wayne woman was critically wounded.

Darvon L. Smith, 33, of Fort Wayne, faces a preliminary charge of aggravated battery, according to a written statement from officer Michael Joyner, police spokesman.

Jennifer M. Hair, 28, of Fort Wayne, was upgraded to serious condition Thursday morning, police said.

Police said there was an argument between Hair and Smith inside 1212 W. Main St. before the shooting, the statement said. Neither lives there.

Police said Smith was taken into custody when a car he was a passenger in was stopped at Calhoun and Pontiac streets at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday. The gun has not been recovered.

Officers were called to the scene about 9:45 p.m. and found the woman with an apparent gunshot wound, said officer Scott Tegtmeyer, Fort Wayne police spokesman.

Fair was shot in the chest, police said.

There were several witnesses inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, and police were interviewing them to get a better idea of what took place inside.

Neighbors said the property, which is a rental unit, has a high turnover with people moving in and out on a regular basis.
