Bryant Young was one of four assistant coaches introduced by San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre on Friday.
Young was a defensive graduate assistant at Notre Dame last season and was offered the chance to stay on at the same position by Irish coach Brian Kelly.
Young will coach the defensive line at San Jose State.
"It’s something that I thought about for a long time," Young told the Associated Press. "I was fighting it a little bit until I decided to see if it would be a good fit. Notre Dame was a great experience and I learned a lot."
Young played for the Irish from 1990-93. He had 176 tackles, 22 1/2 tackles for loss and 18 sacks at Notre Dame.
He played in the NFL for 14 seasons, reaching the Pro Bowl four times as a mainstay on the San Francisco 49ers defensive line.
