Leno ‘devastated’
Jay Leno was devastated when NBC executives asked him to leave The Tonight Show in 2004 because they wanted to give the program to Conan OBrien.
Leno told Oprah Winfrey on Thursdays episode of her talk show that he told a white lie on the air when he said he was going to retire because he assumed he would find another job in show business.
Leno, who calls the experience pretty shocking, will return March 1 to Tonight.
Baby now ‘stronger’
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar say their new baby – No. 19 – is doing well, although she was born three months early and weighed less than 2 pounds at birth.
The couple from northwest Arkansas says Josie Brooklyn, 7 weeks, is growing and getting stronger each day. The Duggars and their kids are featured on TLCs newly renamed reality show 19 Kids & Counting, which will showcase Josies birth on a special episode Sunday.
‘Ugly Betty’ gets ax
Its ugly news for all fans of Ugly Betty: ABC says the series will be canceled after this season. The network says eight episodes are left.
A critical and popular success with its premiere in fall 2006, Ugly Betty has struggled in recent years with audience erosion.
Based on a Colombian telenovela, the warmhearted dramedy stars America Ferrera as an ambitious but style-challenged young woman out to build a future at a New York fashion magazine.
Benefit tune planned
Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli will perform Simon and Garfunkels Bridge Over Troubled Water during a fundraising segment for Haiti on Sunday at the Grammys.
The Recording Academy said the duet will be available for download at iTunes.com/Target after the show, with proceeds going to the American Red Cross to benefit earthquake relief efforts.
The 52nd annual Grammy Awards airs at 8 p.m. on CBS. Musics biggest night will include performances by album of the year nominees Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, and the Dave Matthews Band.
Actress ‘hockey mom’
Olivia Newton-John will co-star in a movie musical about Canadas favorite pastime. The Grease and Xanadu star will play the mother of a teen hockey phenom in Score: A Hockey Musical, which begins shooting in Toronto next week.
Director Michael McGowan says he landed the pop singer-turned-actress by sending her the script through a network of friends.
Newton-John will co-write and perform a song for the films final credits, along with Canadian singer Marc Jordan, who plays the hockey dad.
The film will be in theaters Oct. 22.
