Web letter: Cheers & Jeers

CHEERS to the Northcrest shopping center Kohl’s managers and employees. My purse was lost in their store. Every manager and employee helped us look for it, showing us kindness and patience. To our surprise, 28 hours later, an employee called to say it had been found. Unbelievably, everything was still in it. The workers’ honesty is to be commended.

SUE P. SECULOFF Fort Wayne

CHEERS to the woman who stopped her car and got out to help catch my dog on Dec. 19 and to a couple in a truck who saw my dog running and turned around. I know they were going to stop, too. I didn’t get any of their names, but I really did appreciate it.

I could not catch my dog, and he wouldn’t come to me. I couldn’t run after him because I became so short of breath.

PANSY SHADY Fort Wayne

CHEERS to the adult son and his father who helped us at J.C. Penney’s

parking lot when the car wouldn’t start after shopping at Glenbrook Square on Dec. 14. They took the time to help move the car and then went back to their vehicle for their battery charger to start it. It’s refreshing to know there are good Samaritans willing to help someone in need.

HAROLD and JEAN WILKERSON Fort Wayne

CHEERS to the volunteer drivers of Homebound Meals, who drove 43,020 miles delivering 36,838 hot meals to the homebound clients in Fort Wayne. Our program would not exist without the dedication of these wonderful people.

CHEERS to Judie Kunkle of Ossian who made 200 needlework pandas to deliver to the clients of Homebound Meals during the holiday season.

CHEERS to Marcia Etsler and the women of Beta Sigma Phi who donated packs of snowman notepads, pencils and candy canes for all our clients. These wonderful women think of the Homebound Meals clients throughout the years with various other handouts.

CHEERS to Home Instead and Walgreen, which collected snacks, calendars and personal care products for the clients in need. I had a van full of donations of these much appreciated items.

CHEERS to the fifth- and sixth-grade classes at St. Vincent School and Daisy Troop No. 20046 run by Coleen Amorini, who donated wonderful hand-drawn projects that were delivered to our clients with their meals.

JUDITH GREGG Executive Director Homebound Meals Inc. Fort Wayne

CHEERS to the Fort Wayne community for their generosity this holiday season. We received so many wonderful gifts for the families we serve. A very special CHEERS to Paul O. Sauerteig, Steve Gard and the staff at the Oyster Bar for once again providing our shelter clients with the most incredible Christmas dinner. CHEERS to Santa for bringing the winning smiles to faces of the children at the shelter. A heartfelt “thank you.”

HOLLY AMBER SARAH MAGSAMEN YWCA Holiday Hugs Program

JEERS to anyone who pushes his or her religion on another person. It is this type of “my God is right” thinking that causes terrorism. There are many different people with many different beliefs in this world, and no one should push his or her belief system on anyone.

LISA GERARDY Fort Wayne

CHEERS to Indiana Congressmen Mark Souder, Mike Pence and Dan Burton and South Carolina Congressman Henry Brown for co-sponsoring a resolution to put the emphasis on Christ and Christmas and not the “happy holidays” greeting. This is not a frivolous resolution as The Journal Gazette editorial page states.

SHARON HULLINGER Wolcottville

This year’s Share the Warmth Children’s Winter Coat Collection program was an outstanding success. A total of 2,343 coats were distributed among 36 schools and 13 social services agencies working with families in need. The coats were distributed before December school holiday break. Thanks to wonderful donors, we were able to deliver all the coats that were requested.

Our sincere thanks and CHEERS go to:

Employees of Lincoln Financial Group Information Technology Group who donated more than $1,400; a generous donor who walked into our office with $300 cash; Joe Mendenhall, store assistant manager at J.C. Penney at Glenbrook Square, and his staff who personally assisted us with our order; teachers and case managers who took the time to place an order for the number of coats and sizes that were needed; SCAN, CANI, Catholic Charities, Easter Seal ARC, YWCA and Healthier Moms and Babies case managers who placed orders for hundreds of coats for their clients; Komets and Mad Ants, who collected coats at their home games and offered incentives to their fans who donated; St. Andrew Soup Kitchen volunteers who distributed many coats on a daily basis; the staff of the Wayne Township Trustee’s office who gave coats to many families in need; our knitters who produced hundreds of sets of knitted goods that went with a majority of the coats; the RSVP volunteer team who sorted vast mountains of coats, matched mittens, scarves and hats and filled the orders for each group; our great partners, WANE TV-Channel 15, Kroger and Scott’s Food Stores, Radio U.S. 93.3 and Peerless Cleaners; every person who took the time to donate coats.

Please remember this great Fort Wayne tradition again next year.

JEAN JOLEY Executive Director Volunteer Center RSVP

CHEERS to all the Kelley Chevrolet employees who stood outside the dealership to pay their last respects to a longtime employee, Steve Mossburg. CHEERS also to the drivers who stopped their cars in the other lanes of traffic as the hearse stopped in front of the dealership. This was a very emotional sight to all family and friends in the funeral procession. JEERS to the Citilink bus driver who cut off several cars in the funeral procession. Shame on this person for being so disrespectful.

JANELLE SCHUMAN Columbia City

CHEERS to all the workers at the Coliseum. During the program of the Rockettes, my husband became quite ill. Help came immediately, and one usher, Vincent, stayed by our side throughout and at the end of the show took our group to the front door via the elevator. Our grateful thanks to all.

BOBBIE STEIN Fort Wayne

CHEERS to Irene Walters, who just completed her term as president of the board of United Way of Allen County. Her passion and drive to help others made her a truly outstanding board chair.

RON TURPIN Board Chair United Way of Allen County

CHEERS to St. Aloysius J.V. girls basketball team for good sportsmanship and manners.

JULIE EBBING Fort Wayne

Congratulations and CHEERS to the South Side High School speech team for placing first in the speech meet on Jan. 24. They must be doing something right there at South Side. Keep it up!

MARIAH HUCKERIEDE New Haven

CHEERS and thank you to the generous person who paid for our dinner on Christmas Eve at Hall’s Factory. We were more than a little surprised and very grateful. What a wonderful Christmas gift.
