CANI received more than $1.1 million in federal stimulus money to offer Early Head Start services to more people in northeast Indiana and to expand its staff.
The money comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and was part of President Obamas American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. CANI (Community Action of Northeast Indiana) is a non-profit agency that helps communities, families and individuals in poverty.
Early Head Start is an education program aimed at infants through 3-year-olds and pregnant women. It was founded in 1995.
The new money will allow for 72 slots and pay for a manager, six home visitors and two administrative staff. Families in Allen and Noble counties will begin being served June 1.
