For whom the bell tolls … and tolls … and tolls …

Here’s the good news for the Port Huron Icehawks tonight: They were only a touchdown and a field goal away from winning the game.

9-1? Are you kidding?

Two nights after the Komets lost 2-1 to Dayton and had a harder time scoring than the class nerd, they couldn’t help scoring tonight. The goals came in bunches: Four in the first, five in the second, tip-ins, breakaways, long rebounds that went straight to Komet sticks, you name it.

The P.A. bell that tolls for every goal probably will have to be replaced with a new recording, after tonight.

A few notations:

* Komets coach Al Sims brought defenseman Frankie DeAngelis to the Komets thinking he could provide a little punch from the blue line, and tonight he did it. DeAngelis scored two goals in the first period and added three assists for a five-point night, jumping his season point total from 16 to 21 in one outing.

* Mitch Woods dropped the gloves for the first time since his return, and showed immediately that he hasn’t forgotten what to do when he does. He flat-out decked Tab Lardner in the second period, a clean TKO at least.

* Also on the card tonight was Brad MacMillan-Rob Cowan and Kaleigh Schrock-Cowan. Score the first a solid butt-kicking for MacMillan and the second at least a draw.

* The night was sweet revenge for goalie Tim Haun, who was pummeled 6-1 by the Icehawks the last time he faced them up in Port Huron. This time he turned away 33 of 34 shots to notch his 16th victory of the season – a career high.
