So what's happened to IPFW basketball?
A week ago the Mastodons were coming off an emotionally-charged overtime win over IUPUI at Conseco Fieldhouse, then Saturday they lost to last-place Centenary for the second time this season. And to make matters worse, it was the second straight home loss in less than 48 hours.
To quote Vince Lombardi, "What's going on out there?"
Head coach Dane Fife says he doesn't know.
I suspect he might, but that he doesn't want to air his team's dirty laundry in print.
One observation is that it's a tired-looking bunch. Fife even said that guard Ben Botts is tired, and that's plain to see because he's turned the ball over 10 times in the last two games.
The other theory came from guard Zach Plackemeier, who flat out said Saturday that this team isn't as good as maybe it thought it was, particularly after beating IUPUI.
The school, the players - even the coach - are all still taking baby steps; a kind of learn-as-you-go process. There is no winning tradition; no fear factor from other opponents.
IPFW has to play as though it still has something to prove - because heaven knows it still does.
