Web letter by Ronald L. Kirkpatrick: Seeking Race to the Top money doesn’t benefit students

In the story “FWCS shuffles administrators: 21 changing jobs, schools in bid for millions from federal stimulus” (Jan. 26), FWCS Superintendent Wendy Robinson is quoted as saying, “This is the most comprehensive, complicated, risky thing we’ve ever done in this district” (my emphasis).

It appears to be greed for the almighty buck. I believe many careers of promising administrators and teachers will have been heavily damaged by this action. I also believe that many of the administrators were making good progress in improving many of the schools.

Any program that requires the shifting of 50 percent of the teachers in a school is of questionable value. Race to the Top is ground in the same themes as No Child Left Behind. The end result will be the government strings that will dictate curriculum and social and political engineering. It’s cookie-cutter approach to all students.

Government funds will be disbursed over a four-year period through the state Department of Education, another political consideration.

I hope that the Fort Wayne Community Schools makes good use of its 30 pieces of silver.
