These are the images of Indianas Jan. 17 game against Minnesota:
Hoosiers guard Verdell Jones hitting a 12-foot jumper with 32.8 seconds remaining in overtime to put IU ahead. His teammate Christian Watford draining the second of two free throws with four seconds to go. And finally, the students storming the Assembly Hall court to celebrate an 81-78 victory.
Those were much happier times for IU fans. The Hoosiers won their next game, at Penn State, but havent won since.
Indiana (9-16, 3-10 Big Ten) takes its seven-game losing streak to Minneapolis today to face the Gophers (15-10, 6-7).
What did the Hoosiers do so right in that game?
They had their best rebounding performance of the Big Ten season, edging the Gophers 43-31.
I think it is important to have the mind-set that we are going to have to be aggressive on the boards to be successful, IU coach Tom Crean said Friday.
IU shot 42.1 percent from the field in that first game. During the losing streak, IU has failed to reach 40 percent five times. The Hoosiers shot 34.9 percent in Tuesdays 72-58 loss to Michigan State. From the free-throw line, Indiana went 25 of 28, keeping the game manageable.
The last five games we are shooting 76.7 percent from the line, and Verdell and Christian are beginning to understand they can draw contact and help us at the free-throw line, Crean said. It is so important for us to try and get in the bonus as quickly as we can because when you are shooting with confidence from the line, the chance of you having an empty possession is much smaller and you can avoid those stretches where a team might put a run on you.
The challenge comes in duplicating that on the road. The Gophers are 12-2 at home after a 68-52 upset Thursday of No. 14 Wisconsin.
They are a different team at home because they play so fast, and I think that is the biggest difference, Crean said. Williams Arena is a unique place. But they are going to be hungry, especially after a big win against Wisconsin.
