Irish upset Panthers

Notre Dame got what it needed Wednesday.

The Irish ended a three-game losing streak with a 68-53 win over No. 12 Pittsburgh in Purcell Pavilion. And, just as important, they did it with forward Luke Harangody sidelined with a knee injury.

It was Notre Dame's second signature home victory in Big East play. The Irish also knocked off then-No. 8 West Virginia 70-68 Jan. 9.

Notre Dame was lights out from three-point range against Pitt, and the Irish really clamped down on defense against the Panthers.

While this win is big for Notre Dame, it may be too little, too late.

The Irish suffered suspect losses to Rutgers, Seton Hall and St. John's while going 3-4 in their last seven games.

Notre Dame kept the NCAA tournament light on, but it is still very dim.
