Tapestry day includes local activist, TV chef

Longtime community activist Betty Stein will receive the Dedication Award at this year’s Tapestry: A Day for Women event in April, officials announced Tuesday.

Stein, 93, has dedicated herself to numerous organizations including the Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Temple Achduth Vesholom, the Allen County Public Library Building Corp., the Fort Wayne Urban League and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.

Stein also worked at the former Fairfield Junior High School, now Fairfield Elementary, and Memorial Park Middle School and wrote for The News-Sentinel.

The Dedication Award is given to a female role model whose positive activities have encompassed all aspects of her life.

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne officials had a number of announcements related to Tapestry, which will be April 23 at Memorial Coliseum.

The luncheon keynote speaker will be Sandra Lee, host of the Food Network’s “Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee.”

Tapestry, sponsored by Parkview Health, is an annual daylong event that promotes renewal and self-growth for women. It includes sessions on various topics and the opportunity for women to shop at a boutique and visit trade-show exhibits.

A new feature this year is a fashion show presented by Julie Clancy, owner of clothing boutique Jophiel.

Since its inception, Tapestry has raised nearly $300,000, and 19 students have received scholarships. Tapestry 2010 will set records for the number of students to receive scholarships and for the total amount awarded in one year.

Registration for Tapestry begins Friday at www.ipfw.edu/tapestry.
