March Madness in Indiana is usually about basketball, but this year
it might better describe the school-closing debate.
Fort Wayne Community Schools is likely to enter the discussion this
month after the school board begins addressing ideas to cut $15
Kokomo is looking to close three elementary schools and two middle
schools. The superintendent is asking the school board to move the
closing up from 2011 to this fall to cut expenses.
Hundreds of teaching jobs are on the line across the state and the
prospects for finding work look grim for education students graduating
this spring and hoping to stay in Indiana.
Just as the state was beginning to see glimmers of hope in the
private sector, it could be sending hundreds of public employees to
the unemployment rolls.
Gov. Mitch Daniels and State Superintendent Tony Bennett would argue
that teachers hit the "reset button" and take pay and benefit cuts to
