Area athletes thrive at Big Ten title meet

Indiana’s Faith Sherrill placed first in the weight throw at the Big Ten women’s indoor track and field championship Sunday at Penn State.

Sherrill, a Northrop graduate, had a toss of 20.35 meters, which topped her school record of 20.

It is her first Big Ten title.

She took second in the shot put Saturday.

Purdue’s Brianna Neumann finished third in the pole vault, clearing 4.10 meters.

Neumann is also a Northrop graduate.

Indiana’s Andy Bayer, a Leo graduate, finished second in the mile at the Big Ten men’s indoor track and field championship at Minnesota.

Bayer had a time of 4:05.91. Ben Blankenship of Minnesota won the race in 4:05.64.

BASEBALL

Snider player to Heidelberg

Snider’s Lukas Richardson will play college baseball at Heidelberg in Tiffin, Ohio. Richardson earned All-SAC honorable mention honors while helping the Panthers to the Class 4A state championship.

Mets’ Reyes met with investigators

New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes said he met with federal investigators last week regarding a Canadian doctor accused of selling an unapproved drug. Dr. Anthony Galea is facing four charges in his country related to the drug known as Actovegin, which is extracted from calf’s blood and used for healing. His assistant also has been charged in the U.S. for having HGH and another drug while crossing the border in September. Galea is known for using a blood-spinning technique – platelet-rich plasma therapy – designed to speed recovery from injuries. Besides Reyes, he also has treated Tiger Woods and several other professional athletes.

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Mike Lincoln will get the start in the team’s exhibition opener Friday against the Cleveland Indians, manager Dusty Baker said. … Jose Guillen, who had ankle and lower back surgery after his final game Sept. 2, is penciled in to play in the outfield for the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday in an intrasquad game. … Jason Jennings and Brett Tomko signed minor-league contracts with the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, and less than 24 hours later Jennings was getting ready to play catch at camp. But Tomko, who finished the season with Oakland last year, will continue the rehabilitation of an irritated nerve in his right arm that ended his 2009 season prematurely.

Minnesota center charged with DWI

Minnesota Timberwolves center Al Jefferson faces an April 23 court appearance after his arrest on suspicion of DWI near downtown Minneapolis. Minnesota State Patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske said a trooper stopped the 25-year-old Jefferson on Interstate 394 early Sunday for speeding and changing lanes without signaling. The Timberwolves suspended Jefferson for the next two games without pay.

Cavaliers’ O’Neal to have surgery

Cavaliers center Shaquille O’Neal will undergo surgery today to repair his injured right thumb. O’Neal was examined by Dr. Thomas Graham at the National Hand Center in Baltimore. He will perform the surgery. An MRI exam Saturday confirmed the injury was a significant sprain. O’Neal was hurt during a win at Boston on Thursday. The team has not provided any timeline for his return. Cleveland also recalled rookie Danny Green from Erie of the NBA Development League. He was assigned to Erie on Feb. 24 and played in two games for the BayHawks.

SOFTBALL

Mastodons pitcher tosses no-hitter

Amanda Olender threw the first no-hitter in IPFW’s Division I era in a 9-0 victory against Morgan State at the Winthrop Early Bird Tournament. Olender issued one walk and hit a batter for the only base runners given up in the five-inning game. She struck out nine.

TENNIS

Djokovic defends Dubai crown

Novak Djokovic defended his Dubai Championships title in United Arab Emirates, beating Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in a rain-delayed final. Leading 7-5, 2-0 before rain suspended play Saturday, the second-seeded Serb won his 17th career title in a match lasting 3 hours, 21 minutes at the Aviation Club. There were seven breaks of serve in Sunday’s 19 games.

Doubles team 2nd in victories

Defending champions Bob and Mike Bryan moved into second place on the Open Era doubles titles list, winning their 58th career title at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships in Florida. The Bryans beat Philipp Marx of Germany and Igor Zelenay of Slovakia 6-3, 7-6 (3) to snap a tie with Peter Fleming and John McEnroe, and Bob Hewitt and Frew McMillan. The Bryans are four titles away from surpassing the record of 61 held by Australians Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde.
