Archers reel until the end

Gregg Taylor's first season in his second stint as the South Side boys basketball coach didn't end as well as it started.

The Archers began 8-1, but tail spun into a 13-8 finish, including losing 4 of their final 5 games.

The finale was a 67-63 loss to Homestead on Tuesday in the first round of the Marion Class 4A Sectional.

It was a huge improvement from the 3-17 team a year ago which had essentially the same players.

Taylor won 130 games in seven seasons as the Archers' coach in the 1990s before taking almost a decade off and serving as an assistant coach for the South Side boys and girls programs.

But it was not the end Taylor and the Archers wanted after the encouraging beginning, which included wins against Warsaw, Homestead and Bishop Luers.

However, senior point guard Greg Johnson re-aggravated a shoulder injury suffered in football and the Archers really missed his leadership.

South Side missed having a closing speed in 2 of its final 3 games in which the Archers rallied after double figure deficits but still lost in the end.
