Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly took care of two important roles on his staff today.
Kelly announced defensive backs coach Chuck Martin as the program's recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach Mike Elston as special teams coordinator.
Martin coached under Kelly at Grand Valley State and took over as head coach when Kelly left Grand Valley for Central Michigan.
Kelly said in a statement that Martin shares his philosophy on recruiting and that the defensive backs coach is very persistent and very organized.
"We're going to be looking for the best players in the country and we'll continue to recruit nationally," Martin said in a statement.
Elston has coached with Kelly the last six seasons and was the special teams coordinator at Central Michigan in 2006 and Cincinnati from 2007-09. The Bearcats had the Big East Special Teams Player of the Year the last three seasons.
"I love coaching special teams because it allows me to work with all the players from the different position groups on the team and it is such a huge part of the game," Elston said in a statement. "Through kickoff and punt returns, there are many exciting elements of special teams where big plays can occur."
Jon Carpenter and Mike Painter were named defensive graduate assistants, and Scott Booker and Bill Brechin will serve as interns for the offensive coaching staff, the university also announced.
